Carol Ann was born to Ruth and Walter Chang in Honolulu, Hawaii -- the eldest of four. She was a great help to her parents and grandmother Annie Chang, from whom she learned to bake such specialties as sponge cake and lilikoi chiffon pie -- still known around certain parts of Kauai and Oahu.
Carol graduated from Farrington High School. She eventually took accounting classes and found her way to W.E. Denison Corporation, a condo association management company, where she handled their books for more than 30 years until retirement.
She lived in Kalihi for most of her life, accommodating extended visits from her nephew Martin and family pets Sheila (cat) and Miki (dog). She enjoyed knitting and sewing: children in the family were often gifted a homemade quilt from Auntie Carol. She moved in with her parents in their old age, taking on the role of primary caregiver until she was no longer able to do so because of her illness.
She enjoyed watching theatre and opera, traveling (often in groups with friends and family), PBS, singing classes, reading, baking, spending holidays with family (including full days of cooking), finding seasonal decorations and ornaments at Goodwill, and watching the Late Show with David Letterman.
Carol is survived by her siblings and their families: Dennis, his wife Mabel and son Martin; sister Arlene (John) Purbaugh; and youngest brother Brayson.
Funeral service will be held at First Chinese Church (1054 S King St) on Saturday, Feb. 25. Viewing (cremation urn only) will be at 10 am, followed by service at 10:30. Lunch will be served at 12 pm at Legend Seafood Restaurant in Chinese Cultural Plaza (location to be confirmed). 3 pm burial at Hawaiian Memorial Park in Kaneohe. Flowers are appreciated. In lieu of donations to the family, please consider a contribution to the Alzheimer's Association (please specify "in memory of Carol Ann Chang"). Further details and updates will be posted at

She attended Kamehameha Schools and received a degree from Hawaii Business College.
The hobby that brought her the greatest joy was cooking for others. You won't meet anyone that has had her fried rice say that there's any better. She also loved to dance, whether it was hula, traditional Korean dance, or even Sugarhill Gang Apache's "Jump On It" with her son and grandchildren.

She was a quiet, pioneering woman with a thriving career which included: past President of the National Association of Women in Construction in Hawaii, teacher at the local business college, jewelry store owner, and proprietor of a real estate brokerage and escrow/ title company. Her enterprising work ethic lives on today through her children.

17, 1925 - August 28, 2020
It's almost a year now and we're finally laying our Dad Cosme "Frank" Lagon to eternal rest beside his devoted wife of 69 years, our mom, Josephine DaMate Lagon, at Mililani Memorial Park. Due to Covid restrictions our family was placed on a "wait-list" for Dad's anticipated celebration of life and military burial ceremony. He passed on August 28, 2020 at Queens Medical Center West. Limited viewing and cremation were held October 2020.
A Catholic funeral mass will be held at Ewa Immaculate Conception Church, Renton Road at 9:00 am, Saturday, August 28th, followed with a celebration of Dad's life at Mililani Mauka Chapel from 10:15 to 11:30 am. Burial at 11:45 am. Limited seating. Social distancing and wearing masks are required at church and Mililani Memorial Chapel.
Dad was born at home and delivered by a midwife in Kahuku Plantation Camp. He retired from Ewa/Oahu Sugar Plantation and Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard, Shop 72 with a strong work ethic. A hard working man with two full time jobs, day and night shifts, to support his family.
Even after his death, Dad was recently honored and awarded the Congressional Gold Medal which was signed into law by President Obama in December 2016, for the American Filipino veterans who fought in the Philippines during World War II. It was a bittersweet moment as he never shared about the war, yet was finally acknowledged after over 75 years.
Dad is survived by daughters Cathy Quevido, Jo-Ann Reed of CA, Fran Santos (Rogie), Della B. Wells of CA (Larry); 26 grandchildren, 54 great-grandchildren, 39 great-great-grandchildren; sister Christina Turner and brother Lawrence Movera of CA; companion Mary Medeiros.
Dad is predeceased by Mom; his parents Felipe Lagon and Mamerta/ Rufino Movera; eldest daughter Doreen Canoy and husband Manny; brothers Lucas Laoron, Frederico Lagon, Danny Lagon, Benito Lagon; sister Felomina Goode, sons-in-law Timothy Reed, Kim Baricuatro, and Ernie Quevido; granddaughter Tiffini Reed Tobe and great-great-grandson Knox Canoy.
Our family also want to wish Dad a spiritual and prayerful Happy Birthday this past week Tuesday, August 17, 2020. We love and miss you every day!]]>

Although she sometimes said that she had no real passion in life, those who knew her knew better. Sandy's passion was her ohana-the family, friends, and strangers she loved and cared for so well. A devoted daughter, a forgiving wife, a fiercely loving mother and grandmother, and a true friend, Sandy's passion was a gift.
A child of Hawaii, Sandy was born on February 19, 1959 in Honolulu, the eldest daughter of the late Roy Shimabukuro and Florence Nakasone Shimabukuro. She is the sister of Jill (David) Palmer and Scott (Kathleen Chu) Shimabukuro, and the beloved aunt of Lindsay, Robin, Sky, and Toby. She graduated Punahou School before attending the University of Michigan, where she graduated in 1981. She subsequently earned an MBA from the University of Pittsburgh.
A woman of Pittsburgh, Sandy lived in western Pennsylvania since 1983, where she created a home and family with her husband of 37 years, Daniel J. Buysse. Sandy is the beloved mother of Caitlin (Abdullah Kandil) Buysse, Allison Buysse, and Evan Buysse, and the proud grandmother of Layla and Rayan Kandil. She instilled values of family, education, responsibility, and independence in each of her children.
In addition to her family, Sandy held decades-long friendships from every phase of her life. She worked for 9 years as a "cuddler" in the Magee Womens Hospital NICU, and taught English as a second language. She was a voracious reader, enjoyed travel, and made sure her family was steeped in the setting, culture, and family values of her native Hawaii.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. Sandy's ashes will be scattered at Leahi (Diamond Head), overlooking Honolulu and in sight of her childhood home. Donations can be made to Animal Friends of Pittsburgh, the International Rescue Committee, or the charity of your choice.
A hui hou makou, aloha makou ia 'oe.
